3. Week 03 - 3D Printing

Create a 3D object with the 3d printer

3D printed “community rules”

We currently more than 10 3D printers freely accessible by the students ans searchers within the fablab UP Saclay. The main issue I encounter is that when a machine is not working properly it is due to a lack of basic maintenance : filaments pieces blocking a sensor, while cleaning the printer after a print can avoid this aspect; using the wrong filament settings, due to a lack of observation on the machine; Calibration issues, due to interchanging printer’s beds, due to a lack of information regarding the sensitivity of the printers levelling aspects.

I chose to design a pedagogic wall combining several aspects to check before and after printing; To do so i designed a print-in place “check” system :

In order to print-in place I had to make sure of the tolerances, so it would be able to move after the print. I tried zith a 0.2mm tolerance first :

Designed a pin than can be moved with a finger :

added a cross and a check sign :

Before going further zith the design, I tested this system to make sure it is working :

After this print test, it was working quite properly but i had to use a tool to unlock the system. I modified the tolerance to 0.3mm, and the sliding mechanism was more fluid to operate.

Then I 3d printed more of those :

Going further with my sign design, I created some “titles” to display : Before and After 3D printing :

I had previously laser cut a peg board, the dimension of the holes here are fitting this peg board.

Trying to 3D print with two colors for a better readability :

Are you planning to use the fabricated object in your classroom? If so, how?

Think on a learning activity involving 3D printing. How could it be aligned with your curriculum / standard? What are the challenges?

Have you started an educational portfolio? Why or why not? . In your opinoin which are the advantages of having these education portfolios? How do evaluate success a learning activity and how do you keep track of possible modification/improvements ideas?
