2. Week 02

Project 17 Goals for sustainable development

Since I was sick last week, I couldnt finish my project, but here is the outline:

In my school we are doing a project, where students are supposed make the 17 goals for sustainable development into a sign, where we can note, what the school has done for each of these goals.

Our plan is to make a base plate, where the goal itself and small plates with text about what the school has done for it can be mounted. The base plate and the goal are made from lasercut MDF.

The plan is to make at least one of the symbols for the goals from some sustanainable material to glue it to the base plate:

  1. Cut the mold from MDF: Lasercut a square 300 x 300 mm.
  2. Prepare the mold: mount textile to the lasercut square with the clips.
  3. Pour the shape: Prepare the solution with gelatine and dye it with strawberry juice. Then pour it into the prepared mold.
  4. Lasercut the symbol: Let it cool for seven days, then cut the symbol (experiment with the values first).
  5. Glue the symbol to the base plate.

Here are some pictures of the project cut from MDF and painted:

Reflection Questions

1. Have you considered sustainable practices in your teaching in the pasts? How? What aspects do you think should be improved in your own teaching environment?

Yes I have considered sustainable practices in your teaching in the pasts. The choice of materials in lessons plays an important role, when the pupils build objects. It’s also important to think about how to reduce waste or recycle/reuse waste from subtractive manifacturing. For example the wood dust or chips can be mixed with glue to create filling material. Also the project, which is mentioned above to teach pupils about sustainable practices.

2. How Digital Fabrication might support sustainable practices? When using Digital Fabrication what actions you can take to support sustainable practices.

Digital Fabrication can help to produce complex parts locally so they don’t have to fabricated and shipped somwhere else. Teaching the pupils about how to use these tools helps them to produce things by themselves. Also Materials used in Digital Farbication like PLA (and wood) are sustainable materials.

3. Do you think your school is ready to a change in mindset? Why? How can you get support from other stakeholders? How would you structure a training for teachers?
