1.1 Maker Culture in Education

I met my fellow Global Master Class students and facilitors. The class provided participants with an overview of the maker mindset. There are 5 Educational Fabrication Learning Lab Hubs in the world - Pittsburg, USA; Singapore, Asia; Barcelona, Spain; Dilijan, Armenia and Oulu, Finland.

Kris and Soloman gave me a tour and overview of the Fablab at Aalto University in Helsinki, FI.

Maker Mindset

Consider the change in one’s personal mindset, the mindset of teachers and the students we teach. Shifting the teacher style from ‘Sage on the Stage’ to ‘Guide on the Side.’ Teachers don’t have all of the answers, they encourage risk taking as a valuable learning experiences. Part of the learning also involves engaging families.

Potentials outweigh challenges in these maker enviroments.
-Students learn and practice the engineering design process. -Problem process based learning - design based learning. -Personal connections w/community and the world. -Students develop maker Ccompetencies -Teaching content through design -Identify problems - create solutions and prototypes
