Week 8

Assignments

-Task 1: Create or modify a 3D object to 3D print.

Process

  • I have a new tablet which I use as a second monitor in the office and in class, so I decided to make a portable stand for it.
  • To save time and resources I took an existing model and modified it. Since the original file was optimized for the P1S, I had to change some settings to adapt it for the A1, as well as tried to fit everything in one plate.
  • I made a 3D version of the logo of our FabLab and in the slicer filled out the original logo in the stand with a primitive and then used my FabLab’s logo as a hole to indent it in the stand.
  • Finally, after printing, the quality of the small snap on pieces wasn’t the best, so I did some post-processing to make them fit into place.

Reflection

  • Are you planning to use the fabricated object in your classroom? If so, how? I plan to use it mainly in the office, but I’ll also used it sometimes in the classroom when I need to have more information than what fits in my screen, such as speaker notes during presentations.
  • Think on a learning activity involving 3D printing. How could it be aligned with your curriculum / standard? What are the challenges? We normally use our 3D printers for the final prototypes during our lesson plans. We like to teach Tinkercad to the students and after creating prototypes with quick, craft materials, they design the 3D model to slice and print. We make sure they include functional parts such as hinges and learn of concepts such as tolerances.
  • Explain one successful educational activity in which you collaborated with other educators. What are the advantages and disadvantages of working with other educators? What are the main aspects to take into account to prepare an education activity among 2 or more educators? I work consistently with other educators in my FabLab, so most of our educational programs are done in teams. Classes go smoother when someone else is there to help the main instructor by guiding the students while the main instructor teaches or resolving issues with individual students, specially things like helping students having trouble logging into Tinkercad without delaying the class for the ones that were able to do it. Even so, it takes work training the secondary instructors on the lesson plans. When you design a curriculum, you need to make sure you have the resources to pass it on and explain it to others, since it’s easy to fall in the trap of having the information only in your mind.
